The town of Westerly, RI is a picturesque coastline community located on the southern tip of Rhode Island, just minutes away from Interstate 95 and bordering the southern corner of Connecticut. The town has an atomosphere of an old New England Village and has a unique history.
Known as a vacation area, the winds bring in the cool bracing sea air, and the temperature in the summer is rarely oppressive. Rowing, swimming, ocean sailing, fishing, and hiking make this a favorite resort area. Westerly's seven miles of sandy beach are a mecca for tourism.
The seven-mile strip is composed of Misquamicut State Beach, Westerly beach, public and many private beaches. Misquamicut State Beach is open year-round while other beaches are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The town of Westerly is composed of seven villages: Westerly, Watch Hill, Dunn's Corners, Misquamicut, Bradford, Shelter Harbor and Weekapaug. In 2002, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Westerly as one of the 12 Most Distinctive Destinations in the country. With its unique, well-preserved architecture downtown, coupled with 55 historic sites, such as the Babcock-Smith House and Flying Horse Carousel, it's no surprise that Westerly received this outstanding designation.
Westerly is home to the Colonial Theater and Theater by the Sea, two very popular venues for the dramatic arts. Colonial Theater, a member of Actor's Equity, is a professional dramatic arts facility that presents dramas, comedies and musicals throughout the year. Theatre by the Sea, a summer stock theater in its 63rd year, presents Broadway shows to much popular acclaim.
Downtown Westerly....
When you step into Downtown Westerly, you step back to a time where a main street was actually a "Main Street". Many businesses call downtown Westerly home. Whether you're looking for fashionable clothing for a night out on the town, or antiques, Downtown Westerly is the place to look and is easily accessed from Pine Lodge Village.
The heart of the downtown area is Wilcox Park, an 18 acre Victorian Strolling Park that is home to beautiful gardens, statuary, and arboretum. Wilcox Park is also home to many events including the Virtu Art Festival, The Summer Pops and the Colonial Theater's Shakespeare in the Park.
There is ample street and lot parking and is serviced by the local Westerly Amtrak Train Station.
